Get Involved In Downtown Muncie's New Year's Eve CelebrationSubmitted November 24, 2009, by Graham Watson Festivities will begin December 31st at 10:30pm on the Delaware County Courthouse Square with a candlelight walk to the event area in the 400 block of Walnut St. Everyone is invited to bring a candle or flashlight and join us as we celebrate the strength of community for 2010. The event will feature DJ music, warm tents, kid’s activities, fire barrels, a new years wish tree, and projection of NYC’s Time Square celebration to keep everyone entertained as we gear up for the big ball drop and fireworks at midnight! This is an alcohol free, family friendly event. Our local “robotics team” PhyXTGears, composed of high school students from all schools in Muncie and Delaware County designed a New Year’s Eve ball in 2009. Through a grant from the MSD Recycling and Education Initiative they were able to upgrade the lights and programing of the ball for 2010. It will be lowered from a giant crane at midnight with fireworks to follow. Fireworks will be funded entirely through merchant and community sponsorship. The downtown merchants contributed 100% of the funds needed for the fireworks display in 2009. A new website, designed and launched by Ty Morton, has been established to accept community and business contributions to the fireworks fund. If you would like to make a donation to this effort, please visit www.LightUpMuncie.org. Heart of the City is a 501C3 and all donations are tax deductible. We hope this Downtown celebration will give all of us a way to stand united in the heart of the city for a wonderful and productive New Year.
