• Poetry Reading with Mark Neely 7:30pm @ Bracken Library, room 104

  Ball State English professor and poet Mark Neely will read from his new chapbook, Four of a Kind (Concrete Wolf Press), next Tuesday, October 26th at 7:30 p.m. in Bracken Library, room 104. The reading will be followed by a reception and book signing with the author. Both events are free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

• Heritage Film: The Laramie Project 7pm @ Pruis Hall Ball State University

  On October 6th of 1998 Matthew Shepard, a gay college student, was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days later. His torture and murder became a historical moment in America that highlighted many of the fault lines in our culture. Five weeks later, Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. The Laramie Project (2002) is a film adaptation of Kaufman's play, in which the thoughts and opinions of Laramie residents from all points of the political spectrum are presented alongside re-enacted excerpts from the trials of the two men who attacked Matthew Shepard.

  A musical as much about New York as it is about the people who inhabit it, Company follows five married, once-married, or soon-to-be married couples connected by Bobby, their mutual friend who searches for love. As seen through Bobby's eyes, these relationships in their different stages reveal a number of unique ideas of commitment and its struggles and triumphs. Bobby learns that while relationships aren't perfect, they are certainly essential to "Being Alive".
